2007 Summer Comp
The day started on a sombre note with the players taking a minutes silence to mark the passing of youngster Kane Radford who passed away that morning after a long and painful fight with lukemia. Nothing can be put in print to cover such a tragety and our sincere condolances go out to the Radford family for their great loss. All players who knew Kane played in black armbands as a show of respect for such a fine young man and he will be very sadly missed by all. He played the cards dealt to him with dignity and grace and for that we can only hold him in awe. RIP Kane.
As a measure of our respect for Kane The NSW8BALL open singles title will be named the Kane Radford memorial NSW8ball singles title.
The service for Kane will be on Thursday 10.00am at the Christian Outreach Centre, 23 Carseldine Road, Bridgewater Downs.
The finals got under way at the Coolangatta Hotel with 13 of the 14 teams participating. Happy Days failed to turn up and forfeited which was a disappointment, but steady Eddie from Happy Days was slotted in to the Snowmen team who were short 1 player and it was all good.
The games definitely had the grand final pressure to them and there were no easy wins anywhere. As minor premiers my lads really struggled to get past the 3 man Coolie Vannesa side who were still at their peak early in the day but with the help of the 4 byes we got home to go into the semis against Sea Masters who as I predicted had a little to much finals experience for the Blow Ins and got up easily in the end 9-4 to advance. The other quarters saw Wattys Tigers really get pushed by Jaggers (without their star Dene Heremaia). The captains squared off and Vikki looked like she was about to complete the upset of the season against Watty with an out from nowhere but went in off when on the black and Watty scrambled away with the win. It was certainly to close for comfort for the Tigers but they advanced into the semis to play the winner of the Eels and Still Playing, which was another sea sawing game, at 6 all it was anyones game then The Captain nailed Brent and at 6-7 the odds on premiership favourites were looking down the barrel of defeat. Once again finals experience showed and the Eels slivered out of a dangerous situation and won the last 3 to get up 9-7 and win a date with The Tigers in the semies.
So the semis were set with the Cellar Dwellers vs Sea Masters and The Eels Vs The Tigers. My lads made terribly hard work of our game with Sea Masters and we only put it to bed when Oscar missed a black against me and we got up 9-7 saving a play off by the 2 captains which would surely have been a luck of the draw result. So we were of to the finals with 3 guys who had no A grade grand finals experience, a really super effort from Michael, Willie and Mr Bean. The Sea Masters then played off for 3rd or 4th spot vs the loser of the other semi. In the other semi The Eels really put it to the Tigers and blew them away 9-4 with Watty winning his 3 and Trent ending their misery with a master to clinch their spot in the finals. The Eels went into the final as raging hot favourites but my lads were there waiting for them.
The brothers Watt?s game for 3rd saw Team Watt snr (Sea Masters)bounce to a 4-1 lead the Team Watt Jnr (Tigers) come storming back on the dodgey table to put 7 straight on the board and then coast into 3rd spot with Sea Masters 4th. Pee North finally came good late and maybe we need a twilight final series for the big man. His cheer squad wasn?t put to the test early but good to see him come good late. Dennis and his "boys" can be proud of their year and were only a black off maybe being in the final, I would like to thank Oscar for being the years super sub and I think he played in most rounds and got to play in the final and did really well.
The fight for 5th and 6th saw a nip and tuck dogfight between the young guns (Hot Shots) and the not so young guns (sorry Blake) (Still Playing). The game went to the wire with the young guns getting 3 of the last 4 to send the result into golden point. Alas for the young guns Marco Morrison got over the top of Credo (no mean feat that) and pinched it 9-8. The draw with the golden point playoff really adds to the finals pressure. Next season we will bring in best of 3 golden point playoff in the event of a draw.
The 3 man Vannessa under huge pressure (from the bar) got away with 7th spot from the Jaggers who wound up 8th. However the Jaggers first round effort against 3rd placegetters Tigers suggest they were gutted by the loss and didn?t pick themselves up again. Skipper Vikki has really got the art of subbing down to a fine art.
While all this main draw stuff was going on the 9th to 13th sides where playing off for their positions on the ladder. The Woodies (Hot Shots) came from back in the pack to finally be crunched by the Flair Crew 9-2 to end up 10th with the Flair Crew finishing the season 9th just outside the 8 but a disappointment for them I am sure. Gnoma and her gnomes will be back though for the next season with maybe air guitarist superstar Ricketty Rick Coleman in their midst. That will bring them right into contention.
Balltearers were 11th and will have an over haul before next season Management 12th with a name change and their new recruit Ben will be far more competitive next season. Snowmen came up the rear but they to improved greatly from what they showed at the start of the year. Happy Days forfeited and were the wooden spoon holders.
GRAND FINAL: The Eels were hot favourites but we were ready for a fight and Mr Bean rolled Brent and I got lucky and it was 2 all at quarter time. 2nd quarter saw Mr Bean take out Justin but I got sloppy against Mickey and it was 5-3 at half time Brent and Trent got their games. Willie and Michael were playing well but one bad shot a game was costing them.
The championship quarter saw Mickey take out Michael after Michael made all the running, then Mr Bean rolled Trent, Willie had a brain exposion against Justin with 2 shots in hand but being his first season at pool he will learn big time from that. Then I got lucky against Brent and we went in the last quarter 5-7 down but with a sniff. Trent and Mickey blew that sniff out of the water and the Eels ended up well deserved North Coast Summer comp champions. My lads did me proud and with the experience will be all the better for next season.
The Captain presented Brent with a perpetual trophy and all winners and runners up were presented a grand final medallion.
That ended a very successful North Coast summer comp with the Eels as fitting champions.
